I provide counseling, psychotherapy, life coaching, crisis intervention, and educational services, to individuals, couples, focus groups, first responders, military, civic and faith-based organizations. I provide a specialized form of psychotherapy based in Choice Theory - Reality Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy Models. Using a brief-solution focused mode of practice, it is my responsibility to assess your needs quickly and collaborate with you to develop and execute a course of treatment for those needs.
Following our session, you will likely be provided with reading material that addresses the specific problems you are facing, free of charge.
I am a non-traditional counselor; I prefer working in shorts and flipflops to a suit and dress shoes. If it were plausible, I would provide most of my counsel next to a river, on a mountain, or near the ocean. I do meet with clients in my office in Worthington Ohio, and I am also formally trained in Adventure and Wilderness Therapy. I assume that anyone coming to my office is intelligent and able to make decisions for themselves. Subsequently, I discourage arguing between clients and support the acquisition of skills for better decision making to address life’s challenges. I have learned a great deal about what is needed to help people acquire health and hope. It is my intention to collaborate with you in addressing the challenges in your life.
It’s been said, “Reality cares nothing about your feelings.” We live in a time where people focus too heavily on their thoughts and emotions, to the exclusion of what they need to do to improve their own lives. William Glasser, the author of Choice Theory (the foundation for Reality Therapy) shared,
“If you want to change attitudes, start with a change in behavior. In other words, begin to act the part, as well as you can, of the person you would rather be, the person you most want to become. Gradually, the old, fearful person will fade away.”

I believe a central key to success in our individual lives is this simple formula: Intellect over Emotion. Our emotions should fuel our drive but should never lead. Often the head and the heart war against each other. When we decide to do what is right, even if it doesn’t feel right, often the heart will eventually catch up to the head. Positive action breeds positive emotions.
It is my hope that as we work as a team, you can chart a new course in your life. A path that will lead you to mental, emotional, physical, relational, and spiritual health.
I look forward to working with you, Dr. Laurence Brian Patterson
Counseling is defined as, "a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals." Counseling involves helping people make needed changes in ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving, and is a goal-based collaborative process, involving a non-judgmental, supportive counselor who works with a client in telling his or her story, setting viable goals, and developing strategies and plans necessary to accomplish these goals.
Psychotherapy is a way to help people with a broad variety of mental illnesses and emotional difficulties. Psychotherapy can help eliminate or control troubling symptoms so a person can function better and can increase well-being and healing. Problems helped by psychotherapy include difficulties in coping with daily life; the impact of trauma, medical illness or loss, like the death of a loved one; and specific mental disorders, like depression or anxiety.
